Sitemap Generator

Turn a list of page URLs into an XML sitemap file.

Upload the file to your site's root (e.g. https://example.com/sitemap.xml) and submit it in Google Search Console or reference it from robots.txt with Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml.

Build a sitemap.xml from a list of your pages

Sitemap Generator turns a list of page addresses into a valid XML sitemap that you can upload to your site and submit to search engines. You paste the URLs; it checks them, removes duplicates and writes the file.

It does not crawl your website. A page running in your browser can’t fetch and follow links on another domain, so the tool works only from the URLs you give it. That also means your list never leaves your device — the XML is produced locally.

How to make an XML sitemap

  1. Paste your page URLs into the box, one per line, each starting with http:// or https://. Lines beginning with # are ignored, so you can leave notes.
  2. Optionally choose Last modified (Today or Pick a date), Change frequency and Priority. Each is left out unless you pick a value.
  3. Click Generate sitemap and read the summary and any warnings.
  4. Click Download sitemap.xml, or Copy XML to paste it elsewhere.
  5. Upload the file to your site’s root folder and submit its address in Google Search Console, or add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt.

Checking the summary and warnings

  • URL count: how many addresses made it into the file.
  • Duplicates removed: the same page listed twice. Anything after a # in a URL is dropped first, so page#intro and page count as one.
  • Invalid lines skipped: up to ten are listed with their line numbers, usually because the http:// or https:// is missing.
  • Different hosts: a warning if the list mixes sites. Note that www.example.com and example.com count as different hosts.
  • 50,000 URL limit: a single sitemap can hold 50,000 addresses; extra URLs are left out and you’re told to split them into another file.

When a hand-made sitemap makes sense

  • Small static sites: a portfolio or brochure site with no CMS plugin to make one for you.
  • New sites: help search engines discover pages before many other sites link to them.
  • Launching a section: make a separate sitemap for a batch of new pages.
  • Exports from other tools: turn a URL list from a spreadsheet or crawl report into proper sitemap XML.

Getting the list right

  • Only include pages you want in search results: skip redirects, error pages, and pages marked noindex.
  • Use the exact address each page treats as canonical, including https and your chosen www or non-www version.
  • Last modified, Change frequency and Priority apply the same value to every URL. If your pages change at different times, leave Last modified out rather than giving every page today’s date.
  • Generate the title and description for each page with the Meta Tag Generator.

Sitemap Generator: common questions

Can it find all the pages on my site automatically?

No. You need to supply the URLs. Copy them from your CMS, your site’s navigation, or a crawl export, then paste them in.

Do priority and change frequency matter?

Google has said it ignores both values. Other search engines may read them, which is why they’re available, but leaving them out is fine.

Will spaces or accents in my URLs cause problems?

No. Each URL is converted to its standard form — spaces and special characters are percent-encoded, domain names are lowercased — and characters like & are escaped for XML.

Where do I put the sitemap file?

Usually at the root of your site, for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml. A sitemap generally covers only URLs at or below the folder it’s stored in.
